Temptations are difficult to overcome. Jesus was able to do because he is the Son of God and he made it look so easy fighting the devil. He was just quoting scriptures at him and then the devil would try another temptation. If only it was that easy for us. Then I think all of us would know the scripture better. Temptations are something to not take lightly and be ready for whenever they come up. It can and will be anytime, so always be ready.

What can we gain from Jesus’ temptations? One thing is that when temptations happen, immediately rebuke it. Do not think about it or entertain it. Jesus does not listen to what the devil tells him. He immediately told him no by quoting scripture to him. He does not listen even to one second what the devil is telling him. He wants no part of it. That is what we should do too. We should not even think about temptations because we are sinful humans that will probably give into those temptations.

If you look further at what the devil is saying, he is lying to Jesus. Everything that devil does is a lie, just as we read in the first reading. It is all a lie that sounds like the truth but is not. It is all about tricking us to believe in his lie to get us to commit it. And it is extremely easy to believe that lie because it is convincing. Look at every temptation in today’s reading. The one with Adam and Eve, God tell them to not eat of the tree unless you will die, but the devil says it will make you like gods and know what is good and what is evil. Who would not want to know what is good and evil? That would make saying no temptations so much easier. What happened is now we do not know what is good and evil, it was the opposite of what Adam and Eve wanted. Which is what most sin makes us feel afterwards. Now it takes discernment and a right-formed conscience to know what is evil and, at the moment, we usually do not pick the good because there is something enticing about sins.

Brothers and sisters, we need to think about what we are about to do. A lot of sins happen because we do not think. We just let our natural insists control ourselves. We think it will be good to gossip because I must get off my chest what this one person did. Or I must lie right now because it better that I lie than to be punished for what I did. Or I need to let my anger out, so I am not holding it in. And whatever other reason we tell ourselves that it is good to commit a sin. In the end we are lying to ourselves and making us believe it better for us to sin then to be good because it will “help us.”

Brothers and sisters, we all know the truth and what is right and wrong and what we should be doing, but in the moment if we do not think about what we are about to do then we easily commit the sin because it is easier than doing the right thing. It is easier to sin because of temptations and because we like to sin.

With all temptations, it does not mean that it is impossible to say no. It is always possible, but we need Jesus’ help. The reason Jesus did not give into the temptations of the devil is because he is the son of God. He can and does the same for us. We just must call out to him, when we take the moment to think about what we are about to commit ask God to be with us. Ask him to help us. If you are having trouble even asking, then it might be a good time to go to confession. Because once you sin it is easier to sin again.

Las tentaciones son difíciles de vencer. Jesús fue capaz de hacerlo porque él es el Hijo de Dios y lo hizo parecer tan fácil pelear contra el diablo. Solo le estaba citando las escrituras y luego el diablo intentaría otra tentación. Si tan solo fuera tan fácil para nosotros. Entonces creo que todos conoceríamos mejor las escrituras. Las tentaciones son algo que no se debe tomar a la ligera y estar preparado para cuando surjan. Puede ser y será en cualquier momento, así que esté siempre listo.

¿Qué podemos ganar con las tentaciones de Jesús? Una cosa es que cuando sucedan las tentaciones, inmediatamente repréndelas. No lo pienses ni lo entretengas. Jesús no escucha lo que el diablo le dice. Inmediatamente le dijo que no, citándole las Escrituras. No escucha ni un segundo lo que el diablo le dice. Él no quiere ser parte de eso. Eso es lo que debemos hacer nosotros también. Ni siquiera debemos pensar en las tentaciones porque somos humanos pecadores que probablemente cederemos a esas tentaciones.

Si miras más allá de lo que dice el diablo, le está mintiendo a Jesús. Todo lo que hace el diablo es mentira, tal como leemos en la primera lectura. Es toda una mentira que suena a verdad pero no lo es. Se trata de engañarnos para que creamos en su mentira para que la cometamos. Y es extremadamente fácil creer esa mentira porque es convincente. Mira cada tentación en la lectura de hoy. El de Adán y Eva, Dios les dice que no coman del árbol a menos que mueras, pero el diablo dice que te hará como dioses y sabrás lo que es bueno y lo que es malo. ¿Quién no querría saber qué es el bien y el mal? Eso haría que decir no a las tentaciones sea mucho más fácil. Lo que pasó es que ahora no sabemos qué es el bien y el mal, era lo contrario de lo que Adán y Eva querían. Que es lo que más nos hace sentir el pecado después. Ahora bien, se necesita discernimiento y una conciencia bien formada para saber qué es el mal y, por el momento, por lo general no elegimos el bien porque hay algo tentador en los pecados.

Hermanos y hermanas, necesitamos pensar en lo que vamos a hacer. Muchos pecados suceden porque no pensamos. Simplemente dejamos que nuestras insistencias naturales nos controlen. Creemos que será bueno chismear porque debo desahogarme de lo que hizo esta persona. O debo mentir ahora mismo porque es mejor mentir que ser castigado por lo que hice. O necesito dejar salir mi ira, así que no la estoy reteniendo. Y cualquier otra razón por la que nos decimos a nosotros mismos que es bueno cometer un pecado. Al final nos estamos mintiendo a nosotros mismos y haciéndonos creer que es mejor para nosotros pecar que ser buenos porque nos “ayudará”.

Hermanos y hermanas, todos sabemos la verdad y lo que está bien y lo que está mal y lo que deberíamos estar haciendo, pero en el momento si no pensamos en lo que vamos a hacer entonces fácilmente cometemos el pecado porque es más fácil que haciendo lo correcto. Es más fácil pecar por las tentaciones y porque nos gusta pecar.

Con todas las tentaciones, no quiere decir que sea imposible decir que no. Siempre es posible, pero necesitamos la ayuda de Jesús. La razón por la que Jesús no cedió a las tentaciones del diablo es porque él es el hijo de Dios. Él puede y hace lo mismo por nosotros. Solo debemos llamarlo a él, cuando nos tomamos el momento de pensar en lo que estamos a punto de cometer, pedirle a Dios que esté con nosotros. Pídele que nos ayude. Si tiene problemas incluso para preguntar, entonces podría ser un buen momento para ir a confesarse. Porque una vez que pecas es más fácil volver a pecar.

Hermanos y hermanas resistan las tentaciones con la ayuda de Dios.
